Club Announcement - Nigel Oakes

Nicky Small28 Mar 2020 - 10:30

K.C.R.F.C. are sorry to report the sad news of the loss of Nigel Oakes from our club and rugby family.

Nigel died suddenly at home earlier this week and our thoughts are with his extended family at this time. Nigel was a stalwart of K.C.R.F.C. and before that of The Old Carolians RFC which were the only clubs he has ever been involved with. Nigel was heavily involved in the amalgamation between the Town Club and the Old Carolians.

At the amalgamated club, Nigel’s involvement included being a player, Club Captain, President, Chairman, Selector, Coached juniors (including Steve Lloyd, former Moseley and Worcester player and Neil Lyman!) and led the team that put together the package to redevelop the club house and changing rooms. Nigel then stepped down from that committee as his building company J N Oakes Building & Civil Engineering Services Ltd won the bid to physically build the clubhouse we now enjoy.

Nigel was an absolute rugby fan and club man – always very active in the club and supported the club by watching the 1st XV home and away, usually behind the posts, and joining in club functions and work parties to look after the place he built. Very well respected throughout Rugby and will be missed terribly by lots of generations of club members.

Nigel was a great family man with his wife Chris, son Tom and daughter Ellie – Tom also played for K.C.R.F.C. 1st XV (which Nigel was very proud of) until injury ended his career. As Tom put on Facebook, Nigel was not only his father but his friend and hero. Ellie, who lives in Derbyshire, with her husband Craig produced 2 grandchildren, Hettie and Primrose, for Nigel and Chris. With Primrose, the last grandchild, only being born in late January.
