Today the 1st XV play the 2nd team of Newport (Salop) RFC, a well-established club whose 1st team fixtures include clubs like Birkenhead Park, Penrith, Manchester and Anselmians – a club KCs played years back during a good Cup run. Newport 2’s are 5th in the league, while KCs lie 7th.
Last September Newport began their League campaign with a 15-22 home loss against Telford Hornets, followed by 4 more defeats:- at Shrewsbury 47-36, home against Spartans 13-21, away at Stafford 27-13 and at home against Sutton Coldfield 7-50. A win came in October – 29-24 against Wolverhampton but a week later when they visited KCs they lost 31-24.
In November at home they beat Willenhall 36-29, then lost at Veseyans 33-12, followed by a big home win over Newcastle 33-6. In December at home they beat Shrewsbury 41-17, followed by another 2 wins:- against Shrewsbury – 41-17 and Spartans 24-31 ( sweet revenge for earlier defeats!). In January Newport won at Wolverhampto 15-36 and at Burtwood they lost 39-26.
Newport’s playing record is – played 14, lost 8, won 6. We look forward to a good game this afternoon and a few pints together in the clubhouse afterwards.
Come on, you Kidderminster boys!
