When Ambro "The Kingpin" of Veterans rugby stepped down last year many wondered if his young protege Don Giovanni would be able to take on the mantle of such a revered veterans syndicate. Well on Saturday this was firmly put to bed with over 23 veterans travelling to Stoubridge to play a team featuring a mixture of youth and experience.
The game started in nervy fashion as you would expect for the first game of the season but KC's settled quickly and soon brought their running rugby to the party. Don Giovanni's brutal preseason training regime showed its benefit after the ball was put through the backs hands at pace with 2 or 3 support players in close attendance. Such was the shock of seeing support play in Veterans rugby the entire KC's pack stood and watched from the halfway line in disbelief as the backs managed to string a world record 5 passes together and send Russ Slater over in the corner.
Whilst in awe of this new found level of skill the forwards were keen to ensure they were not left out by putting in some brutal runs playing off Jamer and Crockett which ensured every ruck was met with various transgressions from both teams along with cries of dirty cheating bleep bleep bleep!! This ensured the forwards had plenty of set piece work to revel in whilst the backs were waiting to take there chance and pick off there opposite number in attack.
As the half wore on the game fell in to a familiar pattern of Stourbridge having to replace injured players due to penetrating runs from the forwards and centres, backed up with quick hands to the wings resulting in a comfortable lead at half time of 20 - 0. Don Giovanni's message was clear, he wanted more, more, more.
The second half saw changes ring out across the KC's team, unfortunately for Stourbridge this only increased the physicality and speed of the game and KC's were able to exploit a very dogged but ultimately outgunned team. The score line ticked over on a consistent basis leaving the final scoreline 50 - 0 to KC's Vets.
A very positive start to the season for Giovanni's men who next face Redditch away on the the 29th Spetemebr.
